Let’s join a (non-violent) riot!

I have really been an emotional roller coaster these last two weeks.  Our new president frightens me so much and I have been alternating between weeping in depression and fear, and getting angry and taking back my power (and therefore being productive around the house).  My Facebook feed has turned into a political forum.  Gone are the LOLcats and kid pictures.  Everything is about our president and his hateful, planet-destroying behaviors.  In response I’ve decided to become a revolutionary and (re-)join a riot. A normal day in an abnormal life

I decided to do something a little different the other day.  In great hubris, I thought maybe people would like to see what a normal day in my life is like.  I hope that a normal day in my abnormal life will be as interesting as an abnormal day in someone else’s normal life.  If nothing else, I hope you at least find something to laugh at.  This day was a snow day, so it is mostly typical of weekends or school vacations.  If you enjoy it, let me know, and I can do another one about school days, which look significantly different because there is more time to do solitary things.

Drying apples in a dehydrator

This week, I dried apples for the first time.  This is a simple preservation technique, and I’m not really sure why I never did it before.  I wanted to make these delicious sounding Apple Pie Caveman Bars from Civilized Caveman, and it called for dried apples.  I actually looked for dried apples at the grocery store, but we didn’t find any.  Then the light bulb kicked on and I remembered that my dehydrator was actually meant for drying things, not just making yogurt. Christmastide

Christmastide {Thankful Thursday}

This is Christmastide, specifically, the fourth day of Christmas.  No, today, I did not receive four Calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves, or a partridge in a pear tree.  We did have a delivery of heating oil, time to knit a mitten, a new rear suspension in the car, and breakfast made by R.  I highly doubt those will repeat daily for the next week.  I certainly hope not.  For many things, once is nice, more than that is too much.   Continue reading

Humane chicken death

Yesterday we slaughtered a rooster.  We had two roosters and 7 hens, and really only need one.  Our farmlet was Crownos’ third home, after he got too aggressive with other birds on his last farmlet.  For a few months he was just fine here, watching over his two hens and guarding their pen.  But as time went on, he became more aggressive to me and to the kids.  I became very wary of hanging my laundry out to dry because he would body slam my legs.  Little A would come running to me crying because he was chasing her, and he pecked R once pretty hard and drew blood.  Once we discovered that our pullet Beulah was a cockerel, we made the decision that Crownos would have to go in the stew pot. Processing pumpkins – What to do with them all

Despite my not planting any, I harvested a few pumpkins this year from my volunteer garden.  Since the killing frost a few weeks ago, they have been sitting on my counter taking up space and waiting to be processed.  Today I finally got around to tackling at least some of them.  I started with three large pumpkins, two small pumpkins, and a Hubbard squash.  The three large pumpkins are now in the freezer as purée, ready to become pies. Last month I bought a bushel of Cortland apples that were on sale from a local orchard.  My kids were in an apple phase, when they would eat apples faster than I could bring them home.  Of course, the moment I brought home a whole bushel, they lost their ravenous appetite for apples.  So now I had a huge bag of apples just sitting around, waiting to be eaten.  They got bruised as we moved them hither and thither in the kitchen since they had no assigned home.  Finally, I took the whole bag and sorted it by whether they were bruised or not.  There were at least three times as many bruised apples as not.  So I began doing what any sane person would do.  I started making apple crisp pudding. Cheshire County, NH {Thankful Thursday}

I live in a wonderful place.  I feel blessed to live in New England, and although there are many places I would like to visit, there is no place I would rather live than here.  Especially the Connecticut River Valley where it cuts through the Appalachian Mountains.  Technically, I live in the foothills of the mountains, and it is a very wonderful place to live.  Cheshire County will always be the home of my heart. Processing chickens – a local adventure

Last week I learned how to eviscerate chickens.  My husband and I have been wanting to learn how to slaughter and process chickens so we can put our own meat on our table.  One of our roosters has been getting more aggressive lately and little A is afraid of him.  We decided that he will make a good pot pie, but we needed to learn the process first.  A little knowledge and hands on experience go a long way.
