Humane chicken death

Yesterday we slaughtered a rooster.  We had two roosters and 7 hens, and really only need one.  Our farmlet was Crownos’ third home, after he got too aggressive with other birds on his last farmlet.  For a few months he was just fine here, watching over his two hens and guarding their pen.  But as time went on, he became more aggressive to me and to the kids.  I became very wary of hanging my laundry out to dry because he would body slam my legs.  Little A would come running to me crying because he was chasing her, and he pecked R once pretty hard and drew blood.  Once we discovered that our pullet Beulah was a cockerel, we made the decision that Crownos would have to go in the stew pot. Processing pumpkins – What to do with them all

Despite my not planting any, I harvested a few pumpkins this year from my volunteer garden.  Since the killing frost a few weeks ago, they have been sitting on my counter taking up space and waiting to be processed.  Today I finally got around to tackling at least some of them.  I started with three large pumpkins, two small pumpkins, and a Hubbard squash.  The three large pumpkins are now in the freezer as purée, ready to become pies. Processing chickens – a local adventure

Last week I learned how to eviscerate chickens.  My husband and I have been wanting to learn how to slaughter and process chickens so we can put our own meat on our table.  One of our roosters has been getting more aggressive lately and little A is afraid of him.  We decided that he will make a good pot pie, but we needed to learn the process first.  A little knowledge and hands on experience go a long way.
